Description
Insomniacs After School takes place in present-day Nanao, in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture. Ganta Nakami is a high school student whose insomnia leaves him irritable and misunderstood. When he looks for a place to nap, he finds classmate Isaki Magari in the school’s unused observatory. She can’t sleep at night either. The room becomes their shared refuge, and their friendship starts in private, away from classmates who don’t know what they’re struggling with.
To keep using the observatory, they revive the astronomy club. Stargazing and nighttime photography give their growing bond shared goals beyond romance. The story takes its time with quiet conversations and everyday gestures, while detailed nightscapes give the setting a strong presence. The tone is warm and often hopeful, with playful humor, but anxiety, health worries, and family pressures can make it emotionally heavy. There is little violence; the tension is mainly emotional.
Pros
- Small gestures and natural dialogue make the romance feel believable.
- Detailed nightscapes make the stargazing feel tangible.
- Quiet scenes convey the exhaustion and isolation of sleepless nights.
Cons
- Slow stretches of daily life may feel uneventful.
- Later pacing can feel rushed, with some developments given little room.
