Description
Set mainly in modern-day Britain, The Ancient Magus’ Bride follows Chise Hatori, a Japanese teenager who can see supernatural beings. After years of neglect and isolation, she sells herself at an auction. Elias Ainsworth, a nonhuman mage with an animal skull for a head, buys her and brings her to England as his apprentice and intended bride. She discovers faeries, dragons, and magic drawn from British and Celtic folklore. The story later expands to a college for sorcerers in London.
Chise’s recovery and Elias’s struggle to understand human emotions drive the story. Their bond develops slowly, mixing care and dependence with an uneasy power imbalance. Magic comes with costs and obligations, and faeries can be as frightening as they are beautiful. Quiet scenes and gentle humor sit alongside abuse, grief, suicidal thoughts, and sometimes graphic violence. The story often feels warm and hopeful, but it can also be melancholy and emotionally heavy. The pace is leisurely.
Pros
- Detailed creatures and settings make the fantasy world feel alive.
- Chise’s gradual growth gives the emotional scenes weight.
- British folklore gives the magic an eerie sense of wonder.
Cons
- The leisurely pace can feel slow, especially during longer arcs.
- The apprentice-and-bride setup can make the power imbalance uncomfortable.
