Description
At a high school in contemporary Japan, Ryuuji Takasu’s intimidating eyes hide a gentle boy who loves cooking and keeping things tidy. He has a crush on Minori Kushieda, while his tiny, sharp-tempered neighbor Taiga Aisaka likes his best friend, Yusaku Kitamura. Ryuuji and Taiga agree to help each other get closer to their crushes, bringing them into each other’s everyday lives.
Zekkyo’s adaptation of Yuyuko Takemiya’s light novels moves between exaggerated expressions, physical slapstick, and quieter moments of vulnerability. Shared meals and awkward schemes gradually expose the insecurities behind the characters’ public faces. The romance grows tangled with friendship, jealousy, and difficult family relationships, so the lively comedy also makes room for emotional tension.
Pros
- Expressive faces make both the comedy and the vulnerable moments land.
- Inner thoughts and small conversations give the characters’ feelings room to develop.
Cons
- The opening may feel predictable to readers familiar with school romantic comedies.
- Long gaps between volumes can make following the unfinished adaptation frustrating.
