Description
At a high school in contemporary Japan, Kai Ichinose prides himself on his success with girls. His outspoken classmate Riko Takanashi, whom he has known since elementary school, has little patience for his flirting, especially when her friends get hurt. When Kai discovers that Riko has an unrequited crush on a teacher, Suwa, he begins to see her differently. Soon the confident playboy is struggling with his own first love.
Shizuki Fujisawa tells much of the story through Kai’s flustered thoughts as his practiced charm gives way to unfamiliar feelings. The friend group’s own romances gradually become prominent subplots. Expressive faces and teasing between friends keep the mood playful, while jealousy, misunderstandings, and unrequited love bring more painful moments. Riko’s anger often turns into slapstick hitting, and some jokes are sexual.
Pros
- Kai’s awkward first love gives the romance a funny, vulnerable male perspective.
- The supporting cast’s friendships and romances develop alongside the main couple.
- Expressive faces and visual storytelling capture the confusion of falling in love.
Cons
- Kai’s early treatment of girls and the sexual gags can be off-putting.
- His sudden attraction to Riko can feel unconvincing.
