Description
In a fictional empire inspired by premodern China, Maomao is kidnapped from the pleasure district and sold into service at the imperial palace. She hopes to keep her knowledge of medicine quiet, but an illness among the emperor’s children draws her attention. Her deductions catch the eye of Jinshi, a beautiful eunuch who soon finds more mysteries for her to solve.
Medical clues and seemingly small incidents gradually open onto court intrigue. Maomao’s dry humor and fascination with poisons give the story a playful edge, while illness, death, and the vulnerability of palace women keep it from becoming light escapism. Nekokurage’s expressive art accompanies a mystery-led story with a slowly developing romantic thread.
Pros
- Maomao’s medical deductions turn small clues into satisfying connections.
- Nekokurage’s detailed costumes and expressive faces enliven the palace cast.
- Dry comedy and Maomao–Jinshi banter provide relief between darker cases.
Cons
- Readers seeking a central romance may find its progress very slow.
- Court ranks, unfamiliar names, and dense explanations can demand close attention.
