Description
In contemporary Japan, high school students Takaya Suzuki and Kana Takagi keep reliving August 31, the last day of summer vacation. Only they remember the days that have already passed. Takaya wonders whether the loop is tied to the summer goal he never achieved: finding a girlfriend and losing his virginity. His awkward proposal to Kana begins an unusual courtship, although his theory about the loop is still just a guess.
The calendar stands still while their relationship changes through conversations, outings, and attempts to understand each other. Deadpan exchanges and carefully held pauses give the comedy an unhurried rhythm. Behind the suggestive opening is a story about inexperience, desire, and learning to be honest about your feelings, with tender moments alongside emotional setbacks.
Pros
- Deadpan banter and well-timed pauses make the leads’ conversations funny.
- Small changes in the pair’s bond give the repeating day emotional weight.
Cons
- The opening’s sexual jokes and Takaya’s clumsy advances can be off-putting.
- The deliberately still artwork can make the characters feel stiff.
